Creating Effects

Creating Effects – Body Paint Brushes and Applicators

Modern body painting and face painting designs can be as simple or as elaborate as the artist desires. Because there are so many ways to apply body paint and face paint, you can create as intricate a design as you can dream up.

Body painting applicators have come a long way in the last few decades. Body paints, face paints, glitters, latex, and other materials can now be applied with paintbrushes, foam brushes, natural sea sponges, or alternatively with an airbrush (you can even use your bare hands!).

There are several different types of brushes you can use to create unlimited effects with body paints or face paints:

Round brush – Fine or large, this is a great all-purpose body paintbrush to create thick or thin lines.
Flat brush – Fine or large, flat tip brushes are great for getting sharp angles and straight lines and their bristles are just the right texture for use with water based or cream based make-up or body paint.
Tapered tip brush – Feathering effects and sharp lines benefit from the accuracy and subtlety of this type of paintbrush.

Foam brush – Latex goes on simply and easily with large and small foam brushes.
Roller brush – Perfect for base coats or liquid latex. Plus, no brush marks!
High-density sponge – Great for applying thick coats of large amounts of paint.
Stipple sponge – Ideal for adding beards, or doing quick touch ups and special theatrical effects like bruises.

If you keep your body paint and face paint brushes clean – with soap and lukewarm water – and well groomed, your lines will be precise and you’ll get the effect you desire every time. Body painting and face painting brushes should be soft and gentle to the touch, so they are ideal for applying makeup and body paint and face paint to skin.

Some designs are truly exquisite and unbelievable! Yearly bodypainting festivals – notably the American Body Arts Festival in upstate New York and U.S. Bodypainting Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico – display work from truly gifted artists.
